Literary Devices - Imagry

"Where the sun had gone down in simple state- pure of the pomp of clouds- spread a solemn purple, burning with the light of red jewel and furnace flame at one point, on one hill-peak, and extending high and wide, soft and still softer, over half heaven. The east had its own charm of fine deep blue, and its own modest gem, a rising and solitary star: soon it would boast the moon; but she was yet beneath the horizon." (Bronte 354).

Charlote Bronte used colors here to speak to the readers sense of sight. Color is the essential basis for our sght, so colors are extrememly important to us. The sky is described as being a deep purple, invoking the feelings of melencholy and resignation. Then she further describes how the sky was a bruning red because of the sun. The red inites a firery feeling in the reader. She then describes the east as beeing a deep blood. To the east is hope, a new calmness to be put over the sky.

  1. I really love this quote and I love taking pictures of the sky because of the appeal to the sense of sight. You explained this quote very well.
